Job description

Part Time (18.0 Hours per week – flexible commitment)
Salary Scale £22,440 to £29,034 pro rata, per annum
An enthusiastic and hard working pharmacy technician is required to work with the pharmacy services team in NHS Highland to deliver technical aspects of pharmaceutical services to the Highland Hospice (an independent sector hospice) under a service level agreement.
Main duties are based in the new Highland Hospice specialist palliative care in-patient unit, a modern facility comprising 9 single rooms and a larger 3 bedded room. The technician will be working closely with the Hospice specialist clinical team, which consists of consultants and doctors, nurses, occupational therapists, counsellors, a social worker, physiotherapist, chaplain, complementary therapist. The technician reports to the Macmillan Palliative &Community Care Pharmacist for NHS Highland and leads a part time pharmacy assistant.
Main duties include developing and managing the technical aspects of quality assured services related to hospice medicines ward stock by supervising the work of the pharmacy assistant in managing stock levels and providing appropriate support. The post holder will contribute to audit and formulary management and be responsible for the medicines reconciliation processes at admission and discharge. Some report writing will be required and the use of computer and paper based systems. Clinical ward kardex review and patient counselling in understanding medicines use and continuity of medicines supplies will be required along with delivering training on pharmaceutical issues and processes to hospice staff. The duties will involve some manual handling.
An SVQ Level 3 in Pharmaceutical Services or equivalent is a requirement of the post, along with SQA Higher national unit dispensary checking technician. The post holder is expected to be a technician registered with the Pharmaceutical General Council and hold an HNC in Pharmaceutical Sciences with relevant clinical and/or project experience. Familiarity with medicines ordering systems within community and hospital settings is required and ideally experience with working in a hospice environment.
