Job description

We transport people every day in London via the London bike hire scheme, protect borders through technology, improve patient care with our health services, provide customer care on behalf of major retailers and many other essential services

The Serco Rail Technical Services business consists of 57 Engineers / Rail technicians, providing technical services such as vehicle testing, metallurgy, NDT and drawing and documentation management to the rail industry. The Business has five separate business streams, each managed by a Team Leader/Manager reporting to the Director, Rail Technical Services.

The Engineering Team helps clients make cost effective use of their assets by offering whole life consultancy services.  In practical terms this means undertaking projects that include elements of service failure investigation, testing and metallurgical examinations. The work ranges from technical tasks such as assessing vehicle performance and compliance issues, through to the preparation of technical justifications to support continued service operation. The team also contributes to Rail Industry research work.

A Manager is sought to lead the Engineering Team of 8 engineers to continue the ongoing development of the team into a broader consultancy rather than task led business. The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to fee paying project work as required in addition to management responsibilities. A background in Rail is highly desirable, and as a minimum, previous experience working in a managerial and relevant technical consultancy capacity is essential

Applicants should:

  • Have a strong technical background (a minimum of 2:1 honours degree in a relevant discipline plus Professional membership of an appropriate Institution)
  • Be able to understand technical concepts from other disciplines at a high level
  • Have good interpersonal skills and the ability to work as a member of a team
  • Be able to work under their own initiative to ensure a successful outcome
  • Have project management and consultancy experience
  • Proven leadership and man-management skills
