We work with the very latest technologies to drive advances in both hardware and software that have genuine real world applications. Whether it is the search for the Higgs Boson and dark matter, analysing climate data or genomics, our systems tackle the biggest and most challenging problems in scientific computing.

STFC’s Scientific Computing Department (SCD) develops leading edge software and computer and data storage infrastructures, to support the work of world class science both within STFC and internationally.

About the role

We now have an excellent opportunity to join the SCD as a Senior Software Engineer within the Software Engineering Group. As a Senior Software Engineer you will provide a DevOps function for important work on research data management services within some of STFC’s large scientific facilities, including the Central Laser facility (CLF), ISIS Neutron Spallation source and the Diamond Light Source. You will be responsible for specific service related functional developments and deployment of the ICAT data management suite for these Facilities. ·         developing the CLF user interface

·         working on wider developments in the ICAT software suite

·         supporting the production service by providing knowledge and expertise to the service manager

·         interacting with the wider ICAT project and other sites deploying your software

·         occasional travel to other STFC locations and project meetings in Europe.

About You

You will be educated to a degree level in a relevant subject or be able to demonstrate significant equivalent experience.

You will be a highly skilled and experienced software engineer with experience in a variety of software engineering processes and experience of modern programming languages, including Python and/or Java. You should also demonstrate experience of working in a collaborative development environment.

Further experience or knowledge in any of the below areas will also be beneficial:

·         operational support of distributed systems

·         GWT UI development

·         whole stack software projects

·         systems administration skills such as Windows and Redhat Linux.

You will demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills in order to build effective working relationships with service managers.

An excellent index linked pension scheme, 30 days leave allowance and flexi-time are offered. Full details of offered benefits can be found on STFC’s careers pages ().
