Job Description

About TAB

TAB's purpose is simple - create mobile experiences that make the world work better for billions of people. It’s a lofty one, but when we inject our mobile specialism into some of the biggest companies in the world, we can create game changingproducts.

Whether its reimagining essential weather services with the Met Office, transforming journey planning with Go-Ahead Group or evolving how TfL test brakes on the tube, our team of cross-functional engineers, designers, strategists, product owners and Agile specialists are ready to take on the challenge.

As the biggest team of mobile specialists in the world (over 500 people globally), we believe that the opportunity for our team is incredibly exciting, as we see user experiences unbundle from smartphones into a multitude of emerging platforms and touchpoints such as cars, speakers and wearables.

Our ambition is to create a nurturing environment that allows every member of our team to help their teammates become the best version of themselves through excellent servant leadership.

The Team

We are adaptable and flexible engineers that put the technology and software design approach at the forefront of our skills, but understand the value in making it simple enough that end user’s and our clients don’t know the software exists. We are working closely with our enterprise clients, leading organisations in industries such as , and .

TAB is looking to expand its offering and to expand the of leadership within our engineering team and we would love you to join our team as a Tech Lead.

Technical leaders at TAB are passionate about 3 things:

·     Working with product teams to use the latest technologies and working practices to deliver high-quality products for our clients;

·     Helping TAB and TABbers to achieve their full potential;

·     Developing TAB’s reputation within the community, to attract more smart, like minded people to join our team

The Tech lead role at TAB encompass all 3 of these areas:

1. Working with Product Teams to deliver high-quality products

The client facing element of the Technical Lead role involves owning the technical design, delivery and assurance of key strategic products for one of our major clients.

Working as part of a collaborative team of engineers, product specialists, designers and client domain experts, role is to help the client exceed their previous expectations of what a successful, valued software product can be.

You will emphasise the product aspect of the software that we develop. Coaching the client and our team to think like a product team, you will ensure decisions are made that help us develop a clear, high value roadmap for the product. You will form a cohesive relationship with our demand, delivery and strategy teams to make the roadmap a reality.

At TAB, we value working in lean, focussed delivery teams that deliver value early and often through working software. You will help coach and align the client’s team on this approach, driving transformation by building, and taking their team along the journey.

Working as part of a co-sourced team is a typical pattern that we follow to enable this value. You will assess and evolve how we work with our clients, and play a key role ensuring the professional health of our team by casting the right individuals to the product based on product and personal career goals.

A key part of your role will be to help guide the team in making the right technology decisions for the product; mentoring on what development languages, frameworks, infrastructure and tooling will they use, promoting our core values of software craftsmanship and incremental architecture design.

Initially drawing on TAB’s core capabilities for delivery, you will quickly help us identify gaps on your product that will improve the product experience. As your knowledge of TAB grows, you will instrument the development of new capabilities, and lead their application to your product, mentoring our wider team along the path of making them business as usual.

2. Developing TAB’s reputation within the community, to attract more smart, like minded people to join our team

A key part of evolving TAB’s capabilities is promoting our engineering brand and image within the wider community. You will play a lead role in identifying the spaces and events to which we should be contributing.

As well as owning the strategy for this, you will play a key role in pushing our team’s involvement forward, encouraging and mentoring membership and prominence within tactical engineering communities.

As a leader of community and capability, you will play a key role talking to our new and existing clients and candidate hires alike about our new initiatives - whether it is hiring and promoting for a new machine learning capability, or expanding our pool of tech leads to service the roadmap of your product.

3. Helping TAB and TABbers to achieve their full potential

In time, you will have the opportunity to get involved with wider strategic initiatives and to individually mentor key individuals within our engineering or wider team.  At TAB, we run a circle structure that focuses on the key areas critical to the company’s health and growth. Longer term involvement in the initiatives being run will have further major tangible impact on the business.
